Discover VMware Horizon – Part 2

Horizon VMware

This is the second part on my article regarding VMware Horizon. First part can be found here.

In the first part, we have:

  • Installed Connection Server
  • Installed Secure Server
  • Make initial Configuration

In this part 2 we will:

  • Install VMWare Horizon Agent on Windows Server 2019
  • Configure the Windows Server in Horizon View
  • Test connection from Internal Network

Windows Server Agent Installation

I will use a Windows Server 2019 as published desktop.

I already have deployed a Windows Server 2019 Template which is domain-joined.

Here after you have 2 choices:

  • Desktop Mode
  • Remote Desktop Session

If you want to have multi-session on your server, you will need to install Remote Desktop Session Host role before the VMware Horizon Agent.

I have did it on my Windows Server 2019.

  • Launch Setup
  • Click on Next
  • Accept the license agreement and click on Next
  • Click on Next
  • Click on Next
  • Provide the name of the Connection Server, provide Authentication if needed and click on Next
  • Click on Install
  • Once the installation is finished, click on Finish
  • Click on Yes to reboot the server
  • Shutdown the server after the reboot and create a snapshot

Configure Windows Server in Horizon View

  • Under Resources, click on Farms
  • Click on Add
  • Select Manual Farm and click on Next
  • Provide a name for the Farm, select the check box if you want to allow HTML access and click on Next
  • Select the Source Virtual machine and click on Next
  • Click on Finish

Publish Application

For the purpose of this article, I have installed Adobe Acrobat Reader and Google Chrome on the View Server.

  • Click on Catalog
  • Click on Application Pools
  • Click on Add
  • Select the applications to publish and click on Next
  • Click on Finish
  • Click on Add
  • Select User or Group and click on OK
  • Click on OK

Test Access from Internal Network

As we will connect using Microsoft Remote Desktop Services, users need to be member of the Remote Desktop Users group on local server, to simplify things, I have made Horizon-Users AD group member of Remote Desktop Users.

To validate that published applications are accessible, at least on Internal network, you will need to connect to Horizon Client.

  • Open a Web Browser and point to https://connection-server-fqdn
  • Here we have the choice to install and use VMware Horizon Client or use VMware Horizon HTML Access. Click on VMware Horizon HTML Access
  • Provide credentials and click on Login
  • Click on one of the published applications, in my example Acrobat Reader DC
  • A message popup appear, click on OK
  • The application opens successfully

The part 3 will follow soon with the steps to provide secure remote access

Stay tuned…
